I’d rather have a dev getting a proper Windows build that is running well and optimised for being used with Proton (which is far easier) than a badly working Linux native version

Look at you, eager to lower your standards so the people taking your money don’t have to work as hard.

Look at you, on your high horse, who thinks that resources both are infinite and must be attributed to our little niche because your little morals think it’s the most important thing. Rather antagonising your own people if someone is willing to even move away one inch from your high morals to compromise with the rest of the world than to find an actual working solution. Because then you wouldn’t be able to fuss about it.

Perfect is the enemy of good.

I suspect paradox are just taking a fuck you attitude here, but that’s a separate point.

Like it or not, Linux is a very small part of the gaming ecosystem. We also now have proton, that makes it far less of an issue.

Give all this, I would rather a reliable windows version, with an eye towards not fucking over the proton translation. Any Linux version would likely lack a lot of bug testing etc.

The goal is a stable fast game that runs on Linux. How that is achieved is almost irrelevant. At this point, asking them to play nice with our translation layer is the best option.

That’s generally how I see games these days. I don’t play paradox interactive crap, but I’m way behind on releases and it feels great.

All the games I play are available for free thanks to torrenting and all the content is already in them. I wish I had realized to do this sooner, would’ve saved a lot of money.

This is a non-issue. If you’re a gaming company in the era of Proton, it makes more sense to just focus on Windows issues than to open yourself to support requests from people running any brand of Linux. Proton is just so much easier to target than standalone Linux and you can serve the Linux community / Steam Deck users without needing any actual expertise.

This is the scenario I saw debated in the early 2000s on slashdot if you replace Proton with Wine. Some folks didn’t like Wine because if it works well it means there’s no reason to build natively for Linux, hurting Linux and contextualizing it within Microsoft’s ecosystem, instead of beside it. I’m all for anything that means I can play my Steam library and not run Windows, so I think Proton is the bee’s knees.

Yeah, I was part of those arguments too. In a perfect world Linux would have enough market share to warrant native ports, but Proton getting Wine one-click integrated into Steam and easily targetable is a more realistic bridge to that scenario than holding out on principle. As it is Linux gaming is in the best shape it’s ever been in thanks to Proton.

I also think the argument held more weight 20 years ago, before we started packaging up end user apps in giant self-contained images regularly.

Given how Paradox published (not in-house developed) games are increasingly Windows only I’m not surprised. I hope they eventually release a Linux version anyway, but it’s probably not a huge deal with Proton being so good for single-player games.

Their existing releases run better under proton than natively for me (unfortunately).

I think we’re heading towards a situation where only FOSS games and certain indies get native ports.

Proton doesn’t need to be allowed. It will be fine, unless they decide to put some terrible anti-cheat.

Obnoxious launchers - which paradox are bad for - can also fuck with proton. They can be worked around though whereas the rootkit anti-cheat is a complete blocker.

They can. Though their workaround won’t take long to come with a Proton update. At least Paradox isn’t known with that kind of anti-cheat.
